Professor Mark McGurk

Mark McGurk is Professor and Head of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at King’s College London Dental Institute. He qualified in medicine and dental surgery at the University of Sheffield and has held posts at the Queen’s Medical Centre, Nottingham and the Turner Dental School at the University of Manchester.

Guy’s Hospital has a long history in the practice of head and neck surgery and Mark has an active research programme includes the application of PET in head and neck, including 3D computer augmented reality that allows tumour images to be projected onto the patient in real time. Mark’s laboratory has also revolutionized the current practice of parotid surgery, moving away from a major to a minor procedure, and Guy’s is now the centre in the UK developing this minimally invasive surgery for benign salivary tumours, meaning many patients who would normally have their glands removed can now be treated successfully by minimally invasive means.

Mark also runs an active programme of biomaterial research focused on a bone replacement material, bioglass, and is pioneering the use of 3D computer models in conjunction with rapid prototyping techniques to produce scaffolds tailor-made to replace bone units in the face. This technique provides immediate facial reconstruction with a bioactive material to a very high accuracy.
